AND LO! We did accept a solemn pledge from all the prophets – from thee, [O Muhammad,] as well as from Noah, and Abraham, and Moses, and Jesus the son of Mary: for We accepted a most weighty, solemn pledge from [all of] them,


* v.7 : This parenthetic passage connects with verses 1-3 above, and relates to every prophet’s “pledge” – i.e., sacred duty – to convey God’s message to man, and thus to act as “a bearer of glad tidings and a warner.” (For my rendering of idh, in this context, as “lo,” see sūrah 2, note 21.)
